The Mass Air Flow sensor measures the volume, temperature, and density of the air so that your vehicles computer can properly calculate the correct air and fuel mixture. It reports those measurements to your vehicles computer, which makes adjustments to keep your engine performing efficiently. If this sensor becomes contaminated (through a dirty air filter, for example) it will send out false readings that will affect drivability, your catalytic converter, exhaust emissions, trigger a check engine light, and could even prevent your engine from running. Your first line of defense from contamination is your vehicles air filter. When it's dirty, dust and other contaminants get through to the Mass Air Flow sensor.
